bad firmware upgrade?

Ok guys, after a bunch of reading on problems with the WRT54GS I figured I should update my firmware. I did so for the following reasons:
- have lived here for 6 months, everyhting worked just fine until last week. started losing network availability.
- 5 computers, 3 gaming consoles, 1 router. consoles connect just fine. computers show no network available.
- when there is a signal, it chooses when it wants to be on and off.
- my computer is hardwired into router. still shows no connection, even though I am clearly connected.

so post firmware update, my router doesn't even exist according to all hardware. all I wanted to do was make sure my router was working properly so I could setup range expander for the whiners upstairs. what happened? what can i do, if anything? thanks in advance.

~edit~
and the little cisco bars are lit up and they weren't pre-firmware upgrade. don't know if that helps any.

it keeps coming. now i get BSoD at random.

linksys WRT54GS ... but the owner of the house went out and bought a new router because it wasn't even transmitting a wireless signal, and this router is having the same problems. now its the linksys WRT54GX2. and this one won't even let me load webpages all the way. they will just stop at 40 or 50 percent and never time out.
