I keep getting this message from AVG, it doesn't say anything about AVG 8.5 being free. if I click (Install Now) will I be fooled into paying for something I don't want ?

After upgrading the program for awhile there starts to be to many changes, so after a point they want you to reinstall for the next version.

you may be directed to a free trial which may have 30 days to use the product and time to activate. You should get Norton or Mcafee. Some ISP's give you a free Anti virus and spyware app to keep your computer and network secure.
;) :D

Correct on the ISP deal - it may be worth looking into if you want. AVG or AntiVir tend to be quite a bit less intrusive and resource intensive than either Norton or McAfee. Though, I do hear that the new Norton is a complete rewrite from the ground up and much less cumbersome.

As for the free trial period... AVG has three versions: AVG Free (completely free - no trial period), AVG Pro (paid - $35 or a 30 day trial), AVG Internet Security (paid - $55 or a 30 day trial). They will not force you to try the paid versions. You can easily grab the latest free version from the link I provided above. Norton and McAfee do not offer any free version.

Thank you everyone you've been so helpful, I was afraid if I clicked on (Install Now) I wouldn't be able to go back. but I'll try it now, I talked to our local isp and was told if you go for a free trial it's sometimes difficult to go back to the completely free version.

Glad to help. :)

If you click install now, it should automatically update you to the new free version. If for some reason you end up with the trial version, just uninstall it and then get the free installer again from free.avg.com. It is not hard at all to re-install or go back to the free version.
