Audio screwing up -help?

So I'm having issues with audio. It's completely fine when it's just the laptop speakers going, but when I plug in any headphones it starts to get screwy. There will be a lot of static going on and it really lags the entire computer. I'm just trying to find a basis on where to start to fix this. I'm thinking that it's gotta do with the actual input...any way to verify this or something? Sorry for the vague information, feel free to ask any questions !

sounds like a connection problem. when you plug in ear phones the interface breaks off contact with your laptop speaker. If the connection to earphones is dirty or corroded and doesn't make good contact you would have trouble.
