Audio not working after I installed video driver.....

I have an older motherboard (from early 2000's) with Onboard audio that uses the Realtek AC97 audio driver.

I recently purchased a video card (Sparkle Nvidia Geforce 8400GS) so I can run dual monitors. When the card was in the slot and i hadn't installed the driver yet, the audio was working fine. After I installed the driver, however, my audio is no longer working. I checked all my connections and speakers and they seem to be hooked up properly. Does it have anything to do with this new driver?

Can you help us out here by seeing if device manager still says the sound driver is properly installed? What have you done so far to fix the issue besides checking the connections?

the device manager says the audio driver is properly installed and working fine.

I've checked my speakers by hooking them up with my record player, worked fine.

I've tried updating the audio driver, did nothing.

Checked all my volume settings, did nothing.

Tried rolling the video driver back to the previous one, did nothing.

I'm running Windows 7 if that helps at all to know.

Any advice is appreciated.

Did you install the drivers from the cd or did you download them online? You should download the latest drivers online from Nvidia's website. Try unistalling the video card to see if the sound returns.

The video card did not come with a driver CD, I downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia. I just tried removing the video card, not sure why but my whole computer wouldn't even start up. It would show the HP logo, try to start the OS, then go back to the HP screen.

I'm thinking i may have messed something up when I opened the computer and took it apart (I have minimal experience with computers), like maybe left a cable unplugged. But I doubt that is possible with onboard audio? Do you think maybe it just quit on me?

Thank you a lot for responding.
