Audio Drivers?

I was wondering if there were any free utilities, which would automatically search my computer to find bad drivers and then give options on how to fix them? It seems like one of my comp's is having some trouble finding the audio driver and Im not sure how to go by finding it myself.

In the Device Manager you can right click at any time on the listings seen in the sound and game controllers section and choose the update driver option. When given the choice of manually browsing a driver disk or having Windows perform an automatic search for the best driver(s) XP will often locate, downlload, and install what it finds as newer versions.

If you have an installed pci sound card go to the manufacturer's support to look for the updates if the auto search doesn't work. There you look up drivers for the make and model card installed. For onboard go to the board's support for the latest usually included in a driver package with drivers for other things like memory controllers.
 
Thanks everyone for the help! Last night I did a little researching and d-loaded the audio drivers for the mobo and installed those. I checked in the device manager and it says all the drivers are working correctly?? But for some reason I still have no sound? I can't even mess with the sound volume through the control panel. There are no options to high light there all in gray... I used the program provided by AMD and it say that the drivers to my sound card are missing, but would not let me update them through the program. To do that I would need to buy it.. So I'm going to Creative website to find the drivers..

Sorry that software didnt help you,I didnt know if it was freeware or not.

What specific drivers are you looking for anyway?

Is it onboard sound or a card?

Il try & help out more.
 
With the correct drivers installed correctly the two things that would usually stop onboard sound from working are the enable/disable setting in the bios setup or a defective audio chip on the board. Have you looked in the bios to see if sound is enabled?

On board sound if so what motherboard do you have, or a sound card what sound card is it!
 
The sound is onboard

The option in the Bios is enabled
The pins are in the correct spot for the onboard audio


I think I might just go out an buy a cheap audio card for it.
 
If you do install a separate sound card remember to disaable the onboard when first powering the system up again. That will insure that Windows has a fresh detection of the new hardware installed and prompt for drivers.
 
Well late last night I finally got the sound control options highlighted and the speaker icon is now noticed in my tool-bar. Still no sound, but I think I’m moving in the right direction. I only got to mess with it for a few minutes before I went to bed. I’m predicting tonight I will have onboard sound!

Hopefully you will that it is only a matter of getting the drivers to take rather then finding out the audio on the board is gone. But let us know how it turns out.
 
Scribble some notes on how you did that along with the driver version used. That can save time later if you run into another problem. Glad to hear it. :)
 
Yeah, I saved all the drivers in a folder, which will go into back up. I found a driver bundle for the mobo and sound card, which had a program which installed them, so it wasn't to bad.
 
A good number of updates for both sound and video will include installers where you practically don't even need the installation disk anymore. The update will often go on completely even after a fresh format of a drive. If you have a cd/dvd burner you can usually collect a list of updates along with utilities and make backup burns periodically until you upgrade hardwares again. :eek: Then the whole process starts all over again. :( :)
