Audio driver refuses too install

On a clients computer I could not for the life of me get the audio driver to install. It's on a newish asus motherboard with the realtek HD chipset. The OS is winxp home sp3 x86. I tried 3 different versions, one from the mb disc, one from the asus website, and one from the realtek website. Every single one ended in a failed installation. I'm baffled, any ideas?

First, you didnt specify how you're installing the drivers. If possible, ditch the software install and direct Windows (using the advanced driver install) to the inf.

If that still fails, pop the computer open, find the chipset and go get the driver from realtek.cz

If it's HD audio, you will need to make sure that you have an entry listed under system devices labeled as Microsoft UAA bus driver for high definition audio before the sound driver will install properly. Do you have that entry listed?

Both ways, first I tried right clicking on it in device manager and updating the driver directing it to the asus mobo cd. It just told me windows couldn't find anything for my hardware. Though interestingly enough windows knew it was a realtek hd.

Thanks john, when I go back I'll check that out. I was googling around when I saw something to that effect...I never remember having to do this with realtek before

Ok, got it fixed. The problem was Microsoft UAA bus driver was installed. I had to disable it and uninstall it before the driver would install. Apparently it's only for the 64 bit version of XP or something?
