Audio detection issue

I just reformatted my harddrive since a virus prevented me from entering safe mode and after everything was done, I came to discover that I had no sound. I looked at my control panel into the sounds and audio devices and it said that I do not have any audio devices. I made sure the speakers were plugged in, and plugged into the right slot which they are. Furthermore, the speakers worked before I reformatted my computer which tells me that it is not a hardware issue. From what I have read: http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-5457-no-audio-no-sound-device-and-troubleshoot-is and http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000629.htm my problem seems to be from an installation issue. My PCI device has a question mark by it which solidifies my point of it being an installation issue

Put simply, my question is how to restore my sound to my computer. Do I have to do something to my PCI? Do I have to reinstall something? If I have to, the model of my computer is: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=465651&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en that is running windows XP service pack 2. If you know what to do, please give me instructions step-by-step so simple a child could understand. I just want to knick this in the butt. If you need anymore information from my end, just reply and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible. Furthermore, if you could just give me a link to the driver that i need I will download it there.

Thanks in advance,
me

You need to reinstall the drivers for your hardware. It will then work properly. What brand and model is your computer?

the model is in the original post, third hyperlink, it is a compaq though. As for the drivers, I've heard that phrase thrown around a lot. I do not know much about computers so what are they? The only thing I have is the windows setup disc that I used to reformat my computer with.

Since there are no sound drivers listed on their site for that model please do this. Right click on that device in device manager and click on properties, click on the details tab. Give me the 4 digit vendor and device ID numbers, they look like this.

To John:
I am having a problem. Everytime I click the "I accept the above" and click next, it takes me to a page that only has Object moved to here with the underlined 'here' hyperlinked. When I click the hyperlink it just brings me back to the same page.

Is there anyway you can give me a direct link to the mirror?

To alexagoin:
How would I do that?
