i have an asus motherboard that has the sound outputs built into it but i cannot get my sound to work... i go through the device manager and it has the "!" in the yellow triangle showing something is wrong... i check for updates and it says that the best drivers are installed for my computer yet when i click on the sound control it says there is no device installed... i cannot seem to get it to work what is my best bet here? anyone else have this situation? do i need to buy and install a new pci sound card?

its a desktop that i built from IBUYPOWER...

We need to know the model number of the motherboard to give you the driver for it. The model number is usually stamped between the PCI slots.

1. there is no model number stamped between the PCI slots... it says 140w cpu support at the top of the board but other than that i didnt see a model number... what will it look like?
2. tried the link went to new user and everything clicked the flashing GO button and the link next to it but the download wont start ever...
3. just yesterday installed windows 7 to the computer and it states that there is a high def audio device recognized and when i go to the equalizer it shows that the computer is recognizing sounds and music playing cause the base and treble and stuff bounces where there is music but there is nothing coming out the sound port. ie... tried headphones in the ports also tried my speakers and the speaker attached to my monitor so its not my speakers its in the port or something...

What version of windows are you running? Go into device manager and right click on the device with the yellow question mark on it and click on properties, then click on the details tab and give me the 4 digit vendor and device ID numbers. They look like the numbers circled in red in the attached image.

Can you give us a link to what you bought from that website?

i do not have the list of things i put in the computer and i dont have a link to the site cause i bought this compute a year ago...

Right click on computer either on desktop or in start menu and click on properties. when the page loads, look in the top left corner and click on device manager.

According to that pic, you don't have an actual sound card installed. Did you by chance disable the onboard sound in the bios? Are you using a dedicated sound card or the onboard sound? You can't install a driver if the machine doesn't actually detect a sound card.

im guessing it has on board sound cause it comes up in the bios and its enabled and there are sound ports on the back of the desktop

If you only have that one item under sound, video and game controllers then the computer isn't detecting your sound card.

so how would i get it to recognize it? or wont i be able to? am i gonna have to buy a pci sound card and install it?

Go into the bios and make sure the onboard hi definition sound is enabled. If it is, then I would say you have a bad motherboard.

well shit thats not what i wanted to hear but alright ill make sure its enabled... so is my best bet to go the sound card route?

Yeah and see if it gets detected. I can't figure out if it was detected in vista but not in windows 7.

alright ill reboot as soon as im done downloading this file and re post to make sure its enabled but i cant figure out why it is being detected in 7 and not vista either... both were clean installs too...
