Are there any freeware video editors?

Hello.

I recently recorded a ton of vootage off VHS tapes onto my computer via a Happauge card....

I am planning on making DVDs out of the footage, but alot of "scenes" such as the snowy effect and messed up footage need to be edited out

Is there any good freeware available?

If there isn't, is there any other program u can suggest?

can u suggest a freeware dvd maker? i have vista, should i just use the one on there?

omg and now when i save a video from windows video maker, although the file is incredibly smaller, the resolution is terrible, is there anyway to just edit the footage without compressing it and losing resolution? ill waste more dvds if it means having clear footage
