Apple and Intel reveal Thunderbolt

Yesterday, Apple implemented a new I/O port on it's refreshed Macbook Pro lineup. Thunderbolt. It's part of the "light peak" project that Intel and Apple have been working on together for some time.

It uses a Mini-Display Port as the connection. However, it's not just for displays. It's a dual-channel 10Gbps I/O system. Apple and Intel have both demonstrated the technology. They managed to stream 4 simultaneous 1080p video clips from a 4-bay Promise NAS.

I think this is fantastic! Sure it's another port, but it's backwards and forwards compatible with other interfaces. You can daisy-chain up to 6 devices together. So you can have your external HDD, up to 2 Displays, Keyboard/Mouse, and network connected with only 1 lead coming from the computer!

I hope this spells the end for USB. I absolutely hate USB with horrid passion.

A closer look at Thunderbolt

Thoughts?

I love the look and speed at Thunderbolt but intel themselves stated this won't replace USB 3.0? Why? Because devices since the first iMac G3 in 1998 has been using it and it has a backwards design. Intel said this is aimed at Audio/Video professionals and enthusiasts. (I'd be an enthusiast for video). 20x times faster then the standard usb 2.0, more than 2x fast as USB 3.0. 12x faster than FireWire 800

It's essentially the mini display port connected to PCI express card.

Using what USB or thunderbolt?

I think thunderbolt will replace firewire.
