Any Obvious Problems?

I have a Centrino Laptop (B standard (sigh)), a desktop connected to a Linksys WRT54G router and a Linksys WPS54G print server wired up to the router.

Both PCs can access the interent via the router and can print. But I simply cannot get them to share files. I have been to Linksys countless times but they keep saying that it is not their problem, but Microsoft's. The router is also a 4 port switch and an access point.

Both are set up as far as I can see for file sharing. I have run the networking wizards on both (wired and wireless) but to no avail. They simply refuse to share files. I have disabled firewalls and countlessly changed the hard drive's sharing properties. I have left most of the settings to automatic, such as IP address etc. Can someone please, please help me?

Are there any really obvious mistakes which I could be making?

Well this may seem tough but it is all very easy to understand..

You need to do the following
1. Make sure they are ALL in the same workgroup
-Right click my computer and click workgroup button. Default is "workgroup"
-Restart all changed computers..

2. Open My network places, click entire network, and then you shoudl see your workgroup.. whatever you called it. Open that up and view your computers..

3. Do you see all computers? If not what OS are you using? Mostly winxp wont see all the older version and you need to instlal a protocol, is this correct? Which os's work?

4. You can connect easil by typing in the computers ip or name. Open IE and where you type a URL type //computername or //192.168.2.XX the computers local ip. To find each computers local Ip click start>run> type cmd, then ipconfig... The 192 or the 168 address is the one your interested in.

Ok? Need anything else?

Ok, thanks. I shall try these solutions.

I have also seen that the computers are configured to automatically get their IP address. Should I set them to fixed? Also do any of the other settings matter, such as MAC address and DHCP (sorry I'm not really a network pro, more a complete novice).

Yes let the ip address be automatic.. easier that way... A mac address is for making the loacl ip address linked to the MAC. Therefore one cmoputer would always have the same local IP (be in the same place, for servers, games etc..).. Just leave all that junk alone, unless you want to do something like remote desktop connection.
