I built this computer for a customer, and it was working fine for a few weeks. He comes in the other day saying he only gets the left channel working. I hook it up, and yes, indeed, there is only one channel.
I figured this was easy, so I opened up the sound properties and made sure the channels were balanced. They were. I checked the equalizer (onboard sound came with software), sound and audio settings in control panel, and any possible program he has installed that uses sound. Nothing worked.
Now thinking it was the onboard hardware, I put in a known working Sound Blaster PCI card. The card was autodetected, which was a good sign. I fire up Windows Media Player, and I still can only get one channel.
I am quite frustrated with the situation, and comically, the song Windows has is Beethoven's No. 9 (Played on a loop so I don't have to keep hitting Play), the same song used in Clockwork Orange. Why must Microsoft have a sick sense of humor and have the only song to test sound problems out with be the same as in the movie?
