is it just music or video? is it video or music production?

Core 2 E6600 $312
Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 $200
Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2-800 $300
Western Digital Raptor X 150GB $220 I assumed he didn't need much space because it would be mostly music.
Creative X-Fi Xtremegame Fatal1ty Professional $125
Thermaltake 700W W0106RU PSU $155
eVGA 8800GTS $460
Sennheiser HD 650 Audiophile Headphones $250

$2022
A lot of room left to pick a case, drives, and such. If there's enough money left, you could upgrade to a 8800GTX.

Noticed he said Ultimate Sound Computer! I would go with this.

*****His he doing gaming? If not go something low end.
Also, if he is storing lots of music why not go with something way high capacity?

You saying that he needs 500GB for music?
Also, the elite and the one i chose are the same cards except the fatal1ty one has X-RAM. I added that just in case the guy wanted to game. The Elite is not a better card in any way...
Another reason why I didn't add the elite was because he said they wanted to use headphones. Why would you need an external I/O box for headphones?

You wouldn't think he would but he might. He might also want some other things on there but he hasn't specified so let's see what else he says.
***The Elite has X-Ram to be exact 64mb of it. Also, it has 116dB SNR compared to that of the Fatal1ty's 109db. Also, he said ultimate sound computer. That taking into consideration he might also want to do other stuff besides just using his headphones.

lol does it really take a raptor to listen to music? I agree with holyjunk, get a huge harddrive, who knows, he might want to watch movies too.

get a cheap grafic's card (a X1300 on PCI-e would do)
a Core2Duo E6400 would be good enough for sound also (plenty of power left too =] ) 2Gb DDR2 RAM (667MHz), a decent motherboard LGA775 C2D compartible ofcourse :) , and maybe 4 500Gb harddiskes in RAID 0 (to make the seeking time shorter, ofcourse you can use smaller Hard-disk's.. 2Terabyte may be a bit much indeed.. :o )
as for the power supply.. (yes, I'm doing it again :P) I can only reccomend the Corsair PSU's. I think the HX520W would be more than enough for this pc. ( these PSU's actually use industrial grade components, wich makes them really durable,.. not to mention they have a 5year manufacturer warranty :) )

the X-Fi soundcards are good,.. but look what sort of audio output's does the pc need? ( I can immagine you would like Coaxial digital out and optical output.

How are those headphones better than the HD 650s?

I assumed that some gaming would be involved. Also, why a e6400 when there's enough money?
I more thing that I find a little strange, no offense, but why would you recommend 2TB for music when you also say to get a worse processor and worse graphics card?
Doesn't the X-Fi Elite come with an external IO box? Couldn't you have the coaxial and optical outs?

why spend more money than needed? just because the budget is there, it doesnt mean that it all has to be spend.
but yea, he could go for a E6600.. but if its only for music (and that is what i get from it so far) its a big overkill already.

as for the soundcard.. I said the X-fi is good, yea... but would you really want an external box for the different outputs?

also.. 2Tb is easely handled by the E6400.. with 2Gb of RAM... and the grafic's card.. well, that one completely has nothing to with it ;)

like its said... Sound pc, not games nothing else is mentioned,.. just dound.. and that mainly contains, a load of storage, fast acces times and good sound quality :)

I would suggest getting at least 1TB since you want ultimate sound production, you will want to encode all sound into lossless formats or 320Kbps mp3 and those can get a bit large.

Take that money, and build him a near silent rig, so when he wants to enjoy his music, he won't have to listen to those fans :)

you must understand that you gave us a very specific feild to work in. you said sound, and it does not take a huge proc and video card to run movies and music. those are hdd intensive things, not huge on proc power or ram, or especially video cards.
