okay, i got wireless network for home, and just got some nice pretty fast broadband, also have ninetendo wii and DS on that network. heres the problem.

i was waiting out the front playing my ds, and wondered how strong the connection was when i was outside. i got about 2 houses away before it started reading as weaker signal. so at 2 houses away i could still use my internet. then the panic started to set it.

-my neighbors would easily be able to join my network.
-my neighbors could be using my net right now.
-i don't know who my neighbors are.
-i need a logon/password for my network.
-if i got a logon password, how will the nintendo logon?
-i dont know what the 1st step is.

i have however got my routers main password changed, so they aint logging onto that to do some nasty stuff.

currently using XP home.

Enter the router settings and put on a 64bit WEP key, it will have to be 64 bit coz of ya DS (dont think they work with any other type of security).

Make sure your wireless network is secured

Dear PTA,

I recently posted the following on another forum - thought you might be interested in view of what you've said. By the way, the only thing that the router password will protect is the settings in your router - it won't stop others from using it to access the internet - or worse, your computer - You definately need to enable eitherr WEP incryption or preferably, if your router supports it, WPA incryption:-

I don't want to sound alarmist but watched a good documentary last week on TV (in the UK) all about identity theft. One of the subjects covered was how easy it is to hack someones computer if they have a wireless network which is unsecured. They showed a couple in a car with a laptop viewing all the networks in range and it was amazing how may of them were unsecured.
I switched on my daughter's laptop and viewed available connections and sure enough, there were several other wireless networks in range from our living room. Most were secured with WPA but a couple weren't.

I have to admit that although I'm firewalled and have Trend Micro 2007 my wireless router wasn't secured. It is WPA secured now though.

Obviously there's alot of discussion about virus/antispyware software and rightly so, but there doesn't seem to be much about wireless network security so I thought it would be worth mentioning this.

Hope somebody gets some benefit from this.

just get a router that supports WEP and set a password. Then put that password in your security settings. I think the DS runs like adhoc and only supports wep, so you can't use wpa encryption. However, wep, even though is not effective against anyone who wants in your network, it is a good enough deterrent from having your neighbors kids just hop on your network.

what router do you currently have?
