Adding 2 Speakers to my 2.1 Speaker Setup

I currently have a 2.1 system setup. (Altec Lansing VS - 3121) My mom is wanting to throw away two speakers that came with my PC. However, I would like to "recycle" these speakers and use them for a surround sound setup (4.1) if posslble. So.. any suggestions.. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.......
 
Well obviously it all depends if your machine even has 4.1 capabilties. Give us the model of the soundcard or computer...

Otherwise, a way to rig it up, you COULD get a headphone jack splitter and just connect two sets of speakers to one output :P
 
My computer has 4.1 capabilities.. srry i didnt specify.. i wasnt really interested in spending money.. lol.. but if needed i guess so.
 
Oh come on, the splitter would of only be about $3 max :P

Well, if you have 4.1 capabilities, then it should be rather obvious :P Plug the speakers you want for the front output in the front output jack, and rear in the rear output jack... Then find the software for your soundcard and select 4 channel. Some soundcards have mulit purpose outputs(like line in/rear out) Of course you must select what it does.
 
the software that came with my computer says i have 4.1 capabilities.. but i dont see any front output and rear output in the back of my computer.. the software says taht i shud use the line out as the rear output... my computer is AMD ATHLON XP PROCESSOR 2600

Front should be your normal output(normally green) You said line out for your rear output, but I bet you meant line-in(very few comps have the actual line out,pre-amp, ports anymore)
 
arite ive tried it following the software direction and nothing seems to work other than the two front speakers... ill probly just use the splitter.. lol ty newayz man

Just use Soundman, you should have a blue icon next to your clock on the taskbar with some yellow "waves". Click on it once, click on the Speaker Configuration and select 4-channel mode.
