Introduction

Acer's A1 830 belongs to their Budget tablet line up and will beat other tablets in the same price range in terms of performance when we look to its specifications. However, we don't only test processing ability, let's see how we see this tablet when we're ready with testing every part in and out. Enjoy!

Features

Featuring a stronger Intel dual core Z2560, the acer tablet will be able to beat its competitors in this price range in terms of performance. For the price of the tablet, this feature is pretty notable. Other features of the tablet are the standard 5MP camera, the 4000mAh battery and an 8 inch screen with a sort of square shape. The Tablet runs on a slightly older Android version (4.2.2) and Acer didn't provide any upgrade until now, so this is a little disappointing. The Tablet also features 16GB of internal storage and you can extend this with a MicroSD card if needed. You can use the micro USB port to charge the device and to share content with your PC.

Design and Screen

Acer tricked us a little with this tablet, normally with get a little bulcky designs for acer devices, but this time Acer looked for some inspiration regarding the Apple brand. The tablet is pretty thin and weighs not all to much, so the tablet feels very comfortable in your hands. Also the backplate of the tablet screams quality. After taking the A1 with me to Paris and back (I can't say I didn't handle it rude sometimes), I can't detect scratches or anything else. The aluminium border and back give the tablet a more expensive look as well.

The screen of Acer's budget tablet has an okay brightness and the viewing angles are great. An 7 inch screen is also a minimum a tablet should have, this tablet has an 8 inch tablet and working with it is very pleasant comparing it to the screen of the samsung Tab 3 7. The shape of the screen is more like a square than the samsung tablet was, and I like it.

However, there are still some downsides about the screen which we don't really appreciate. One, the resolution is very low and the little blur can be seen with the eye; and second, there's a little glass between the real touch screen and the contact surface causing inaccurate clicks with your fingers sometimes. You'll get used on the last one however. The resolution is more a problem when watching videos, reading articles and maybe while gaming if you're a real graphics freak. An advantage of the low resolution can be the fluent gameplay in games with a higher framerate.

Camera

Not the most important part of a tablet, but certainly something that can be an addition to the value if it shoots decent pictures. Acer provides this tablet with a standard camera of 5 MP, but without a built-in flash. We don't expect it to shoot good pictures in house, but outside it should be okay.

Pictures from outside:

Inside:

We're surprised to see decent quality photo's, and even inside most details werre kept in place. However, with the maximum size the site allows us to show the picture, you won't see that the pictures are actually not that detailed. Use the full size link to see it with your own eyes. This product isn't made to use as regular camera, maybe for little snaps, but nothing more.

Sound

One of the more important parts of a tablet is the sound. The A1 from Acer did a decent job on this one. We don't expect a very loud sound coming from a tablet, so this tablet does okay in our opinion. Also the quality can be called decent as well. If we compare the tablet to the budget Tab 3 7 tablet from samsung, we can say that samsung's offering had louder speakers, but better quality of the speakers is not the case.

Performance

In the graph, you'll find scores of phones and tablets ranging from high end to low end. The Tab 3 7 from Samsung is a budget tablet in the same price range as the tested tablet from Acer. The Xperia Z is an high end tablet to give you an idea of the difference.

Where it comes to physics, the Acer A1 830 is much faster than the samsung's budget tablet and it almost catches up with the high end Xperia Z tablet. Also in graphical applications, the Acer performs much better than its competitor, but still lacks performance compared to the Xperia Z in graphics. Antutu tests the whole tablet on many different things, so we can say that this benchmark helps us to compare them in general. Something that immediatly catches the eye is that the Acer tablet actually doesn't really end up bad compared to the high end Xperia Z. It's almost on the same level as this much more expensive tablet from sony! Samsung's budget tablet lacks behind like in the other benchmarks. The performance we got with this tablet is even more than we expected and is a very striking part of the tablet which can't be ignored. Getting 300+ euro performance for ~170 euro is just awesome!

Battery

A battery of a tablet is pretty important, no one is going to sit next to a power outlet while using the tablet... This tablet can work a long time without charging due to his huge battery, however, when you need to fully charge the tablet again, you need to wait the whole night before it has its full power back. About eight hours of browsing is quiet a bit! Overall, we have a positive impression about this part of the tablet. Let's move on to our conclusion!

Conclusion

The Acer A1-830 offers us a big surprise for a very low price. Performancewise, the tablet can be called superior to everything in his price range. Comparing it to the Samsung Tab 3 7", we've to say that the Acer was almost 3 times faster in some situations and was much more pleasant to work/game with!

The very low resolution was a downside of the tablet giving some icons, texts, videos, ... blurred or pixeled spaces. Also the glass between the touch screen and the contact surface was a little irritating, because it gave inaccurate clicks when you touched the screen with your fingers. The viewing angles and brightness on the other side were great.

Also the design of the tablet was pretty nice. Thin and light were two keywords that made the tablet very comfortable to carry around with your hands. The backplate and borders made of a sort aluminium were quality and were resistant to any scratches. It also makes the tablet look more expensive than it is.Also the interface was pretty easy to handle and even your grandmother will be able to do her things on this tablet.

Another great thing is the mobility of this tablet, it's small enough to put it in the inside pocket from your jacket and you can hold it in one hand.

The sound and camera of the tablet were both okay. Pictures taken with this tablet were at least not as rubbish as the ones shot by the TAB 3.

We've to admit that this tablet is one device that we would recommend if you're looking for a decent budget tablet that provides the user with a decent speed.

Performance = 17.5/20

In price range = 10/10 , global = 7.5/10

Battery = 9/10

Camera = 7/10

Sound = 8.5/10

Design and Screen = 7.5/10

Value = 15/15

Total Score ≈ 8.6/10

Do you know the battery life of it from full battery down to empty under certain conditions, say just being left there, watching videos and then browsing the net/general use?

This is one of my shortest reviews I made and that's because I didn't have enough time to review all aspects into details. I'll include more specific results for the battery life in the next tablet/mobile/phone reviews.

I reviewed this tablet when I was on a schooltrip to paris and I had some time to do tests in the evenings/nights. So there hasn't been much time for very specific battery life tests. Anyway, when the tablet was fully charged in the morning and when I came back at around 10pm, the tablet still had a battery of around 90%. So on these findings and just my own experience, I gave this tablet a pretty good score for battery life.
