So, I recently found out to have surround 5.1, you have to have a decent sound card. Wonder if mine is good enough..?

can you tell us what the card is and we can tell you if it is good enough

ya, tell us what you have...

and even a 5.1 or 7.1 onboard sound device can sound good.

(im guessing he has a SoundBlaster Live!)

It would be nice to know what card you have so we can tell you if we think it is good enough...

and also, with a decent sound card you can still end up with crappy 5.1.... speakers are the other half of the equation.. even with a below average sound card and run of the mill speakers you can still have decent 5.1... it all depends on what YOU consider decent sound.. ZERO background noise and static is almost impossible with ANY sound card..

EDIT:

You need to give us a place to start.. what are the rest of your computer specs?

What is your price range for a sound card?

I meant like. If you have a normal one it will **** up the speakers. Or blow up..not blow up, but you get the point. Not function correctly.

On board sound is usually at the bottom or near bottom of the "decent sound card" scale.... and if you turn up the volume and blast a pair of crappy speakers and they blow, it has nothing to do with the sound card... the speakers are the problem. I dont buy into a sound card being the weak link, I think the speakers are.
