2 MP3 player failures in 2 days

Hope you people can help. I have severe tinnitus(ringing in my right ear)and I need to listen to my MP3 player daily to cope with it. A little over a year ago I bought a Sansa Express MP3 player. Very satisfied with it. Thought I should buy a back up one just in case my first one goes kaput. Bought the same model(you can get them for $25).

Something very odd has happened to them in the past 48 hrs. They both simply stopped working. They do nothing when you charge them up(you charge them up by plugging them into your computer USB port. Now 1 breaking down I can understand but both in less that 48 hours? Went to the Sandisk site to try and troubleshoot the problem but no success. I did both the soft and hard reset but nothing. Any ideas out there? Thanks!!

Uhh dude tinnitus is caused by loud music, how does listening to music help it?

Well "Dude" thank you for your worthless reply. And I mean worthless. There is such a thing called "masking" your tinnitus that you might want to take 5 minutes of your time to educate yourself on. I just thought I might find someone on this forum with with some education that could help me with my MP3 problem. I was wrong. Idiot. Oh I see your only 18 and from Australia. That explains it.

You most likely have a power issue with your usb ports. Overcurrent will destroy any usb device. Are you using the front case usb ports or the back ones?

When you say they do nothing, no lights whatsoever, no display, no battery state indication? Totally lifeless?

While the PC would be the common equipment in the issue, those players you can charge in a car. The cheap power units must have really poor voltage regulation and work fine in my experience. If the 5V supply in the PC went very high, you would see issues other than the players. Anything else normally connected by USB?

Perhaps try charging on another PC or car or home charger?

You could check the USB is still working either by connecting another device or by measuring the voltage on the power supply pins of the PC's USB socket (with care). Alternatively check at the end of a standard USB cable in the same socket (easier than the Sansa cable).

Does it register as a drive in Explorer? That may depend on what mode it plays or is set in.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well, because I found a thread on another forum on the subject of the Sandisk Sansa Express not starting up or being recognized by the computer. Apparently it has been remedied in some cases by putting a microSD card in, connecting the player to the computer and formatting the player's internal memory. The reason that has been given is that the file index has been messed up and causes the player to crash when starting.

There is a catch and that is the fact that the player has usually been able to start and show the Sandisk logo for a few seconds before turning itself off. So you might not have the same issue as the one discussed in the thread on the other forum.

If you get them to work, you should check to make sure the firmware is up-to-date.

This just happened yesterday. I bought a new Sansa MP3 player and it's the c140 model. Downloaded 45 songs and after 30 minutes of listening to it,it simply shut down and showed that I did not have any songs on it. When I try to turn it on the screen tells me "No space for DB" and I need to delete some files.

When I plug it into the computer nothing happens. This is a very odd problem and i'm lost. If I was to bet I would think the computer is the problem but have no idea how to fix it. I double checked my USB ports(Front ones, don't have any on the back)with my digital cameras and both of them worked fine. Any idea's what I should do?

I was thinking that maybe I should delete WMP and reinstall it and see if that works. I just got done backing up all my music that I have on WMP. I have WMP 11 and have read where people have deleted WMP11 and reinstalled WMP10 because it just works better. Many Thanks.

When you say they worked fine, was that simply opening up the photo app? Your issue with the PC is that possibly there is no 5V on the power pins of the USB connection so there is no charging capability. The two data connections may still be operative (USB is 4 wires).

Your new player may have had a residual charge in it from the manufacturer. As soon as you used it, it quickly lost the charge and will not recharge from the PC's USB. Try charging and using elsewhere, PC, wall or car USB charger.

Re the WMP, the mp3 player may only be compatible with certain versions. If you go to a more recent version of WMP you need to check there are drivers/firmware updates that support it.

Problem fixed!! Downloaded all songs from WMP and then transfered them to the good ole cassette. Dug out my 2 year old Sony $25 Walkman and listen to my music on that. When 3 MP3 players go down in less than a week for me the answer was to go back to simpler technology.

Seems rather defeatist. Haven't you even tried charging them up somewhere other than on your PC? Amazon sell a home and car USB charging kit for a whopping $5. I'm sure you could get one just as cheap locally. The chances of buying three mp3 duds in a row from a reputable store are about zero.

It did not make much sense connecting another mp3 unit to your PC unless you had exhausted all options first with the other two. Way back, johnb35 suggested it could be an over-voltage. I think it's more likely to be an under-voltage but in both cases you could expect the same results.

I hear ya and I totally agree. Almost 4 years ago our 2004 Dell Computer would not work and was told it would cost over $200 to fix because of a nasty virus and other stuff. We just went ahead and bought a new computer. We kept the Dell and have fired it up a couple of times and it works perfect. The problem was not a virus.

It turned out that Yahoo was having problems and the repair shop thought it was a virus. I plan on plugging in the Dell and seeing what happens to the MP3 players. You talk of buying something where I can charge up the MP3 players in the car. What is the name of that product? I would like to check that out. Thanks for your reply!!

You can buy USB chargers in any electronics location whether it be Walmart or Best Buy. Here's an ad at Amazon so you have a picture! You would connect with your mp3 player USB cable.

Hey thanks for the info! Learn something new everyday. Don't know if this will help but I just got done charging up my wife's ipod nano and it work perfectly. You have to use a USB port for that and everything worked with ITunes.

Some progress but still won't work. I deleted WMP11 and installed WMP10. I plugged my Sansa Express in and it showed up on the computer and started charging. I waited for a full start and unplugged it and it still won't work. I thought I had it fixed. Now when I plug it in it will sync with WMP10 but a message pops up saying WMP10 does not detect any portable device. I thought for sure I figured the problem out.

Have you run through the manual? As you have probably discovered, some of the Sansa range only support WMP10. Have you checked whether you are in MTP or MSC mode? You must be in MTP mode to sync with WMP10 and in MSC to see the drive (and any SD card) in Explorer.

Is the unit charging? If not did you try the charger you bought?
