128kbps CBR or VBR?

Recently my ipod kicked the bucket on me and the warranty expired. So now, I'm stuck with my mother's old iPod Shuffle 512mb, which I actually kind of like but the problem is that there is hardly any storage. So in terms of File Size/Quality, would it be better for me to go with CBR or VBR and why?

CBR is most compatible and will result in a better estimate file size which is usually smaller but VBR has apparantly got better sound quality but it can result in larger files.

VBR is better in that it applies more compression to parts where the loss of information is less noticeable and pulls back on the compression level where it would reduce the quality more, so technically it can make smaller files with a better overall sound quality.

However, I found that at least on my cheapo MP3 player from a few years back seek controls would stuff up on VBR files.
