Hi all,
bought a gpu for my pc, which i have had quite a few years, i5 processor and its a on a gigabyte ga-h55 ud3h motherboard so its old
the problem is when i install the gpu the 4 pin cpu cable from the power supply is too short, the power supply is a app550 made by a company called approx
can i just buy any extension for it,or does it have to be a specific one its only 4 or 5 cm short, any help would be appreciated than you.

The CPU or GPU power cable? You say both but assuming CPU since GPU would be 6 or 8.

1 to 1 straight extensions are generally safe as long as you're not buying the cheapest thing you can find. I've had sleeved extension cables on 2 builds over 5+ years and they're functionally just an extension cord. Converters and cheap components are where you'll run into trouble.

This should work.

yes its the cpu cable to the motherboard but once the gpu is in its not long enough thank you for the advice, i went to two pc shops and they said you have to find out from the manufacture but i thought why do they sell universal ones.

They're thinking of modular power supplies where the cable plugs right into the PSU itself. Those are specific to manufacturers. A straight extension is the same 4 pins in and as it is out, so it shouldn't matter. I even had one of mine come apart and you can tell it's just copper wire terminated to each end so there's really no risk.

This extension kit is similar to mine and you can see the input and outputs are identical.

If you use the wrong cables on a modular power supply, you can cause a fire or other issues, hence their warning. They're covering themselves from liability as much as anything. I used to work in such a shop.

This is a modular power supply cable replacement kit, notice how the ends aren't all the same on each side.
