dear community :)

i use a T420 for years - and i run it with Linux. and i am lovin this Thinkpad for its robust case.

i want to do some thing for it: here are the planned upgrades.

RAM: 4pg up to 8gb
Storage: 300GB HDD change to 256GB SSD + DVD Caddy & 500 MEG HDD

what do you say?

You will definitely see an improvement in speed with the SSD, I find the 240GB enough for my needs, but you know what you keep on the Laptop, so should be fine. You can get an internal DVD drive, you should be able to slide into it which is neater, but not sure what you mean by the 500 MEG HDD. Again it depends on your application, but I find 4GB RAM plenty for general purpose work and didn't notice the difference when I upped my Desktop to 8GB from 4. I would try the SSD before spending the extra on RAM you can easily do it later if you think you need.

With windows Vista and above going from 4gb to 8gb of ram is game changing. Not sure what system you have but upgrading to 8gb ram and adding an ssd makes a world of difference.
